Dr. Dean Ornish and colleagues have shown that a lifestyle regimen featuring meditation, a low-fat vegetarian diet, smoking cessation, and regular exercise can not only stop the progression of coronary heart disease, but actually reverse it. Other diseases may be similarly avoided through simple tweaks in one's lifestyle, he asserts. A trend that concerns him is the dramatic rise of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease across the globe -- as the world begins to eat, live and die as we do in the U.S. Ornish is president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, as well as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
